What is Illini Electric Motorsports?

We are a student organization at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign focused designing, manufacturing, and testing vehicles for the EV Formula SAE competition.

Illini Electric Motorsports is a registered student organization at the University of Illinois that operates independently and is autonomous from the University of Illinois as pursuant to Article 2, Part 3 § 2-303 (d) of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Student Code. Illini Electric Motorsports operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under SAE International dba Illini Electric Motorsports. Illini Electric Motorsports also operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under the University of Illinois dba Illini Formula Electric and/or Illini Electric Motorsports. Although Illini Electric Motorsports maintains 501(c)(3) non-profit operations through other organizations, Illini Electric Motorsports as an organization is not a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Although individual members may utilize the facilities provided by the University, Illini Electric Motorsports is independent and autonomous from the University and we are responsible for our own affairs. In addition Illini Electric Motorsports is not a unit or agent of the university.

The Illini Electric Motorsports name and IEM initialism encompasses Illini Electric Motorsports as a whole, and the individual subteams that make up Illini Electric Motorsports. Illini Electric Motorsports usually refers to the organization in its entirety, but may refer to one or more Illini Electric Motorsports subteams in particular.

Illini Electric Motorsports was formed though a consolidation of Illini Formula Electric and Illini Motorsports. Both Illini Formula Electric and Illini Motorsports were registered student organizations (RSOs) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and were independent organizations. Through the consolidation process resources from both organizations were combined as Illini Formula Electric and Illini Motorsports were dissolved. Illini Electric Motorsports is not a partnership or a network.

For these reasons, you may see the following names in communications, materials, and documentation from Illini Electric Motorsports and the University as we slowly phase out our previous names: Illini Hybrid Racing, Illini Formula Electric, and Illini Motorsports.
