Our Story - where we came from

Since 1979, we have been racing Illini, fostering various teams specializing in combustion, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles.

Today, we are embarking on a new milestone in our history by merging Illini Motorsports with Illini Formula Electric, becoming a singular formula electric team. With a rich legacy and forty-four years of experience across different vehicle technologies, Illini Electric Motorsports, will continue the tradition of success and innovation.

Where we stand today, and in the future

While Formula SAE Electric is heavily centered around engineering, it is a project management competition at its core. Our primary focus is on efficiently managing an ambitious project while nurturing member growth, equipping them with the skills and confidence to excel in their roles today and preparing them for their future endeavors.

The people, what makes IEM

We aspire to bring together people of different scientific, engineering, artistic, and business backgrounds and unite them behind a common goal. The team at Illini Electric Motorsports apply skills learned in the classroom, and develop new skills. By designing, manufacturing, and testing our vehicle members get unique real world experience and incredible access to knowledge, technology, and industry professionals.

Illini Electric Motorsports comprises over 20 different majors, with students from over 4 different continents, speaking languages spanning a multitude of cultures. Prospective members can join as soon as their first undergraduate year or as late as their final postgraduate year. We recruit from a wide array of disciplines ranging from business and accounting, to applied and theoretical sciences. Our alumni network is over 1000 strong and reaches a wide array of industries.
